Hiring Video Production in NYC: Agency vs. Independent Producer vs. Freelancer (2026)

The short answer: for a B2B brand film in NYC, an agency will quote $30,000–$50,000+, a freelancer $3,000–$8,000, and an independent producer-director $10,000–$15,000. The right choice depends on how much strategy you need and how many layers you're willing to pay for — not on who has the best reel.

The agency ($30K–$50K+)

You get a crew, an account manager, and process. You also pay for all three. Agencies make sense for multi-market campaigns, broadcast deliverables, and projects where procurement requires an agency on the PO. For a single brand film or launch video, roughly half the invoice funds coordination rather than craft.

The freelancer ($3K–$8K)

A solo shooter-editor can be excellent value for event recaps and simple social content. The risk isn't skill — it's scope. Most freelancers execute; fewer write, direct, coach talent, and think about where the video fits your funnel. When a project needs strategy, you become the strategist, and that's usually where the timeline and the message slip.

The independent producer-director ($10K–$15K)

The middle path: senior-level strategy, direction, and editing from the person who actually shows up — without agency overhead. My brand film rate is $12,500 including marketing strategy, script guidance, a shoot day with talent coaching, color grading, and two revision rounds. The trade-off is honest: one senior person and a lean crew, not a department. For 2–3 minute B2B films, that's almost always enough.

How to decide in five questions

  1. Is this one film or a multi-market campaign? (Campaign → agency.)

  2. Do you have a script and message ready, or do you need someone to build it? (Need strategy → not a freelancer.)

  3. Does the founder need on-camera coaching? (Usually yes.)

  4. Who handles the cuts for LinkedIn, the deck, and the site? (Ask up front — it changes quotes by thousands.)

  5. What happens if you need a third revision? (Get revision pricing in writing. Mine: two rounds included, $200 per extra round.)
